As far as learning more about the hazards in the work shop, I have since moved on to other machinery such as the centre lathe, which I have heard can be very dangerous due to the rotating parts. We were told of a student who wore a scarf into the workshop and it became entangled in the machine and caused a serious accident. I asked if it is a good idea to tell students about these horror story as a means of explaining the risks of this machine to reinforce an awareness of health and safety. Initially I though scare tactics was a good idea, however a point was raised countering this. Although it might work for some students, a negative aspect of using scare tactics is, it could frighten and prevent confidence in the workshop. This could be very true for young students especially year 7's who might be over whelmed by the workshop already and should be used at the teachers discretion when a teacher has knowledge of individual students.
I myself have suffered from nerves when approaching new machinery and still am a little scared of some machine, however this also makes sure I do everything correctly and safe as possible to avoid having an accident. I spoke to Les (the technician) and he told me that most accidents occur not on the big and 'scary' machines but more often smaller or simple tools and machines as people become complacent. I found this really interesting and made me think about acidents which could occur on machines that i feel are relatively safe. It is important to think about risk in all machines and tools as accidents can occur in anything!
